The ancient fortified village of Isola del Gran Sasso is located on the northeastern slopes of the Gran Sasso
massif. It has excellent views of the Corno Grande, and is called 'Isola' (island) because it is wedged
between two rivers, the Mavone and the Ruzzo torrent. Even after a very long, hot summer, the sounds of
splashing water still lend a fresh, atmospheric air to the town.

Isola del Gran Sasso is the start point for walks up the mountain. There is also a lovely walk to the Castle of Pagliara.
The remains of the ancient castle are found on a steep slope at 980m above sea level. Today's remains still show the layout of the ancient castle.
Nearby the Church of Santa Maria a Pagliara are almost intact.
